About this award

You can receive $25,000 per year for a maximum of 4 years for your doctoral studies. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an international student pursuing a PhD and want to conduct your research at Université Laval. The next competition launches in May 2027. No closing date is posted yet — before you start your application, check the Université Laval / Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur du Québec program page or call their office to confirm the exact closing date for the 2028-2029 cycle. Selection involves a two-step process where you must first be preselected by a Quebec university before being invited to the final competition by the FRQNT (the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies — the agency that manages this program). Selection criteria aren't published — ask Université Laval / Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur du Québec how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Université Laval / Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur du Québec during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. The scholarship can last up to 4 years; ask Université Laval what you need to maintain to keep it each year.

Who qualifies

You must be an international student and find a Université Laval professor who agrees to supervise your research. When you apply for Laval's preselection, you must already be enrolled in, or have applied for admission to, a doctoral program at Université Laval. Laval also requires an average of at least 4 out of 4.33 in your last master's program and at least two scientific articles accepted or published in peer-reviewed journals (co-authored articles count; research-creation students need at least two artistic contributions). You must not have applied for Canadian permanent residence. Only candidates preselected by a Quebec university are invited to the final competition.

Tips for applying

  • Faculty SupportAvoid applying without a confirmed mentor. Instead, secure a professor who agrees to host you and direct your research before you submit your file. Email potential supervisors at your chosen Quebec university to discuss your project.
  • StrategyAvoid treating this as a direct application to the government. Instead, focus your energy on the university preselection phase first. Contact the international admissions office at your target Quebec institution to learn their internal preselection process.
  • RealismAvoid assuming you will reach the final round. Instead, recognize that only those preselected by the university are invited to participate in the final competition. Prepare a strong research proposal to increase your chances of being nominated by the school.
