About this award

No fixed dollar amount is posted for individual students, but the program is backed by a Budget 2019 investment of $362 million over 10 years and $40 million in ongoing funds. Each Métis government that delivers the funding decides how it is shared out. Funding is allocated annually to cover your tuition, student fees, books, supplies, living expenses (including for your dependents), child care, and transportation. It also covers transcript and application fees, as well as initial professional certification and examination fees. This is for you if you are a Métis Nation student living in Canada and working toward a post-secondary credential. You do not apply to Indigenous Services Canada. Each Métis government that delivers the funding sets its own application steps and deadlines: contact the one for your region (Manitoba Métis Federation, Métis Nation British Columbia, Métis Nation Saskatchewan, Otipemisiwak Métis Government, or Métis Nation of Ontario). Eligibility criteria are set by each of these Métis governments — ask yours how funding is decided. Ask the Métis government in your region during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with the Métis government in your region whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You are eligible for this funding if you are a Métis Nation student who resides in Canada. Community education organizations and local services (such as child care, employment programs and mental health supports), and post-secondary institutions whose degrees, diplomas or certificates are recognized by a province or territory, can also receive this funding.

Tips for applying

  • ApplicationAvoid sending a generic request for funds. Instead, clearly list your specific needs from the eligible expense list, such as child care or transportation costs. Create a detailed budget of your expected school costs to show exactly what you need.
  • SupportAvoid applying in isolation. Instead, connect with your regional Métis organization for guidance on the application process. Reach out to the initial recipient in your province to ask about local support services.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the last minute to find your regional contact. Instead, identify which of the five Métis governments listed (like the Métis Nation of Ontario or Manitoba Métis Federation) handles your region right away. Contact them now to confirm their specific internal deadlines.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is your only source of funding. Instead, apply for this alongside other supports like the CSFA (Canada Student Financial Assistance — the federal program for student grants and loans). Check the National Guidelines 2026 to 2027 to see how these funds stack with other grants.
