About this award

You can receive a $1,000.00 award. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a mature student living in Northwestern Ontario who is balancing your studies with financial challenges. You must apply by January 22, 2027. When you apply, ask Confederation College how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, phone, or through a student portal. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Confederation College how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Confederation College during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Confederation College whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a second year student in any program at Confederation College with a minimum GPA (Grade Point Average — the average of all your final grades) of 3.00. You must also be a mature student and a permanent resident of Northwestern Ontario, specifically from Kenora to Sault Ste. Marie. A preference is given to students in Mechanical Engineering Technician or trades programs. This award is granted based on your financial need.

Tips for applying

  • Financial NeedAvoid writing a vague statement about needing money. Instead, provide a clear breakdown of your monthly expenses and income gaps. List your specific costs for rent, food, and books.
  • SupportAvoid using a generic character reference. Instead, ask a teacher or employer who knows your maturity and work ethic to write your letter. Ensure they mention your ability to handle the demands of your program.
  • StrategyAvoid ignoring the preference for certain programs if you are in a different one. Instead, emphasize why your specific field of study is critical for your community in Northwestern Ontario.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the GPA is the only factor. Instead, remember that this award prioritizes financial need, so focus heavily on documenting your financial situation alongside your grades.
