What you will need

About this award

You can receive $5,000 for your first year of study. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a leader of character who has spent your time advocating for others and advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice in your community. You must apply by January 31, 2027. When you apply, ask Lakehead University how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, a student portal, or a phone call. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Lakehead University how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Lakehead University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. This award is renewable for the second year. To keep the funding, you must maintain a minimum 70% average. Confirm with Lakehead University if there are any other requirements to stay eligible for the second payment.

Who qualifies

You must be a full-time undergraduate student from Northwestern Ontario enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering. You must show a commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice through volunteerism, advocacy, community engagement, or leadership initiatives. A first preference is given to students in electrical engineering, and a second preference is given to female students.

• RealismAvoid assuming the preferences guarantee a win. Instead, recognize that while being a woman or an electrical engineering student helps, you still need to prove your commitment to social justice. Focus your energy on the supplemental questions about equity.
