  • Three-part essay answering the three required questions (max 150 words per answer, 450 words total) submitted as a PDF, MS Word, or Google document

About this award

A minimum of 75 scholarships are available, ranging between $500 and $5,000 in value. In 2024, Support Our Troops distributed $287,500 through 104 scholarships to military family members. As these are scholarships, not loans, you do not have to pay this money back. This is for you if you are a spouse or a dependent of a serving member of the CAF (the Canadian Armed Forces — the unified command of Canada's army, navy, and air force). For 2026, the application portal opened May 1, 2026, at 8 a.m. and closed July 16, 2026, at 3 p.m. EST. The official page has not posted 2027 dates yet. You will hear if you were selected by email at the end of September; unsuccessful candidates will also be notified during that time. A selection committee reviews all applications. The official page publishes the essay scoring rubric: how your connection to military life has shaped you, your academic and career goals, how the scholarship would make a difference for you, and your writing style, grammar and spelling. Ask Support Our Troops during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Support Our Troops whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a spouse and/or dependent of a serving member of the CAF (the Canadian Armed Forces). You must also be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. To qualify, you must be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or vocational program at an accredited Canadian college or university that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate. If you are in a study abroad program, you are still eligible as long as that program is included in the course curriculum of your school. You are not eligible if you are a currently serving CAF member or reservist, or if you or a family member (parent, guardian, or spouse) is an employee of Support Our Troops.
