About this award

You can receive a $500 bursary to help with your post-secondary education. There are two awards available in total. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are a former Island View Elementary student who has shown leadership, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to helping your community. You must apply by May 30, 2027. When you apply, ask your guidance counsellor how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, phone, or a student portal. Selections are made by Harbour View High School and Saint John High School. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Greater Saint John Community Foundation how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Greater Saint John Community Foundation during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Greater Saint John Community Foundation whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a former student of Island View Elementary. Additionally, you must be a recent graduate of either Saint John High School or Harbour View High School. One bursary is awarded each year to a graduate of Harbour View High School and one to a graduate of Saint John High School. You must also demonstrate financial need, leadership skills, a solid work ethic, and community involvement.

Tips for applying

  • Community InvolvementAvoid just listing the organizations where you volunteered. Instead, describe one specific time your leadership or work ethic helped someone else in your community. Write about the actual impact you made.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed award since only two are given each year. Instead, apply for several other bursaries through Greater Saint John Community Foundation to increase your chances. Diversify your applications to secure more funding.
