About this award

No fixed dollar amount or duration is posted — contact UBC Okanagan's College of Graduate Studies to confirm the value and length of the award for your specific situation before you apply. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a graduate student living with a disability who needs extended time to complete your degree. No deadline is posted publicly — before you start the application, check UBC Okanagan's College of Graduate Studies page or call their office to confirm when applications open and close this year. Note that applications are reviewed as they are submitted. The Disability Resource Centre (DRC – the office that provides accessibility support) adjudicates the award alongside a representative from the College of Graduate Studies. They look at the quality and feasibility of your completion plan and evidence that your program is supporting you. Ask UBC Okanagan's College of Graduate Studies during your application how the money will reach you – some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. You must remain registered as a full-time student for each term of the scholarship payment. Also, your progress is evaluated through an Annual Progress Report; if your progress is marked as unsatisfactory, you become ineligible until a subsequent report shows improvement.

Who qualifies

You must be a continuing graduate student in a UBC Okanagan program and be registered in that program when you receive the award. You must also be registered with the Disability Resource Centre (DRC – the office that provides accessibility support) with a specific accommodation for extended time to completion. Specifically, if you are in a Masters program, you must be beyond 24 months in the program at the time of receipt; if you are in a Doctoral program, you must be beyond 48 months in the program at the time of receipt. You can receive this award only once per academic year. This is open to Canadian citizens, Permanent Residents, and International students.

Tips for applying

  • Completion PlanAvoid writing a vague list of goals. Instead, outline a concrete plan for the coming year that shows exactly how you will proceed toward finishing your degree. Create a detailed timeline of your remaining milestones.
  • NominationAvoid submitting a generic letter of support. Instead, ensure your graduate program coordinator writes a letter that specifically addresses why your completion plan is feasible. Meet with your coordinator early to discuss your plan before they write the letter.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting for a specific deadline. Since applications are reviewed as they are submitted, you should gather your DRC (Disability Resource Centre) documentation and submit your package as soon as possible.
  • RealismAvoid ignoring your Annual Progress Report status. If your current standing is unsatisfactory, you cannot get this funding until your next six-month interim or annual report confirms you have improved.
