About this award

You get $5,000. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student starting your first year of university with a genuine interest in pursuing a career in the mining industry. You must apply by January 31, 2027. When you apply, ask Lakehead University how and when you will hear back — whether it is through email, a student portal, or by phone. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Lakehead University how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Lakehead University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you are counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Lakehead University whether it is a one-time payment or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a full-time or part-time undergraduate first year student who self-identifies as Indigenous and has an interest in the Mining Industry. You must be enrolled in one of these faculties: Business Administration, Engineering, Science and Environmental Studies, or Natural Resources Management. A preference will be given to you if you originate from school boards within the Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma and Northern Ontario region. First preference is given to students who originate from Wawa Ontario, Michipicoten First Nation or Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg (Pic Mobert First Nation).

How to apply

Check you meet every requirement, and note each document they ask for.

  2. Submit your application

Save a copy, and submit at least a day before the deadline shown above.

Tips for applying

  • Mining InterestAvoid giving a generic answer about liking nature or rocks. Instead, explain exactly what draws you to the mining sector and how it fits your career goals. Write a focused response that stays under the 250-word limit.
  • SupportAvoid submitting your application without checking your regional ties. Instead, clearly state if you are from Wawa, Michipicoten First Nation, or Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg (Pic Mobert First Nation) to ensure the reviewers see your priority status.
  • StrategyAvoid forgetting about the employment side of this award. Since you can work as a summer student at the Eagle River Mine after your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years, mention your willingness to relocate for summer work in your application.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the summer job is automatic. Remember that you must proactively contact Wesdome Eagle River Mine HR in February of each year to be considered and plan your work placement.
