About this award

You will receive a minimum of $3,000, which is a grant that you do not have to pay back. The money is disbursed in two payments: the first is released when you are selected, and the second is released after you successfully complete your program. This is for you if you are a trades student who is committed to finding mentors and engaging professionally with your trade community while you study. If you are starting in the fall, your deadline is October 15th. For programs commencing in the winter term, the application deadline is February 15th. You will receive instructions on how to submit your documents after you submit your initial application through the portal. Selection criteria aren't published — ask RRC Polytech (Red River College Polytechnic) how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask RRC Polytech (Red River College Polytechnic) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep the second half of your funding, you must maintain a minimum 3.00 GPA and prove that you fulfilled your mentorship and professional development commitments. You will also need to submit a short statement explaining how these opportunities helped you personally.

Tips for applying

  • MentorshipAvoid writing a vague statement about wanting a mentor. Instead, outline your specific intention to use professional development opportunities, such as GETT (Global Education and Training Travel) Camps or the Manitoba Skills Competition, to grow in your trade. List the specific events you plan to attend.
  • EngagementAvoid simply stating you are professional. Instead, describe how you will use work-integrated learning or trade-related work experience to connect with experienced professionals in your field.
  • StrategyAvoid leaving the financial section blank if you have a low income. Since financial need may be considered during selection, complete the financial section of the application to ensure the committee sees your full situation.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the full amount is available immediately. Remember that the second payment depends on you hitting a 3.00 GPA and proving your engagement, so track your grades and networking activities from day one.
