About this award

You can receive a $500 bursary. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student pursuing a professional certificate in administration, business, tech, or trades. You must apply between September 1 and October 15. No notification timeline is posted publicly — when you apply, ask Manitoba Hydro how and when you will hear back. Winners are chosen based on your academic performance, your home community, your financial need, and your community involvement. Selection criteria aren't published further — ask Manitoba Hydro how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Manitoba Hydro during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Manitoba Hydro whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be an Indigenous student enrolled in one of the following certificate programs: Administrative Assistant, Business & Administrative Studies, Computer Applications, Contact Centre Representative, Electrical, Human Resources Assistant, or Network Support. You also qualify if you are in the University College of the North (UCN — a public post-secondary institution in Manitoba) certificate programs for Business Administration (specifically Basic Business Principles or Office Assistant) or Heavy Duty Mechanics.

This is what the award's official page said when we last checked. Rules change, so confirm on the award's official page before you apply.

Tips for applying

  • Community InvolvementAvoid just listing the organizations where you volunteered. Instead, describe one specific way your work helped your community. Write about a project where you took the lead.
  • Financial NeedAvoid giving a vague statement that you need money. Instead, explain exactly how this $500 will reduce your stress or cover a specific cost like books. Be clear about your current situation.
  • StrategyAvoid submitting your application on the final day. Instead, aim to send it by early October to ensure any technical issues don't stop you. Set a reminder on your phone for September 1.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed fund since only 1 Indigenous student receives the award. Instead, apply for several other bursaries at the same time. Diversify your search to increase your chances of funding.
