About this award

You can receive a $2,500 bursary. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. There are two of these awards available. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student pursuing a business degree and want to support your studies through your second year until you graduate. You must apply between September 1 and October 15. No notification timeline is posted publicly — when you apply, ask Manitoba Hydro how and when you will hear back. Winners are chosen based on your academic performance, your home community, your financial need, and your community involvement. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask Manitoba Hydro how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Manitoba Hydro during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you are counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Manitoba Hydro whether it is a one-time award or if you can apply again.

Who qualifies

You must be an Indigenous student. You must meet one of these two sets of criteria: 1. You are in your second year to final year of studies in a 4-year Business degree program at the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, or Brandon University. Your major must be in accounting, finance, human resources, Indigenous business studies, marketing, management information systems, or business analytics. 2. You are in your second to final year of the 4-year bachelor of Business Administration degree program at the University College of the North, majoring in accounting or general studies.

Tips for applying

  • Community InvolvementAvoid just listing the organizations where you volunteered. Instead, describe one specific way your involvement helped your community. Write about a project where you took the lead.
  • Financial NeedAvoid giving a vague statement that you need money. Instead, provide a clear breakdown of your current gaps in tuition or living costs. List your specific monthly expenses.
  • StrategyAvoid submitting your application on the final day. Instead, aim to finish by October 10 to ensure you have time to fix any technical errors with the submission. Set a calendar reminder for September 1.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this award is guaranteed because you meet the basic criteria. Instead, remember that only 2 students will receive this funding. Focus your application on the specific selection factors like community ties and financial need.
