About this award

You can receive a $1,500 bursary. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. There are 3 of these awards available. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student starting your journey in a business degree program. You must apply between September 1 and October 15. No notification timeline is posted publicly — when you apply, ask Manitoba Hydro how and when you will hear back. Winners are chosen based on your academic performance, your home community, your financial need, and your community involvement. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask Manitoba Hydro how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Manitoba Hydro during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you are counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Manitoba Hydro whether it is a one-time award or if it is renewable.

Who qualifies

You must be an Indigenous student. You must be enrolled in your first year of studies in a 4-year Business degree program (majoring in accounting, finance, human resources, Indigenous business studies, marketing, management information systems, or business analytics) at the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, or Brandon University. Alternatively, you qualify if you are in the first year of the 4-year bachelor of Business Administration degree program at the University College of the North.

Tips for applying

  • Community InvolvementAvoid just listing the organizations where you volunteered. Instead, describe one specific way your involvement helped your community. Write about a project where you took the lead.
  • Financial NeedAvoid giving a vague statement that you need money. Instead, provide a clear explanation of your current financial gaps. List the specific costs you are struggling to cover.
  • StrategyAvoid submitting your application on the final day. Instead, aim to finish by October 1 to ensure you have time to fix any technical errors. Set a calendar reminder for September 1 so you can start immediately.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed award since only 3 students will receive it. Instead, apply for several other bursaries at your university at the same time. Diversify your applications to increase your chances of funding.
