About this award

You can receive a $500 scholarship. As a grant, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you have a true passion for improving your community and have spent your time volunteering and fundraising in Blind River and the surrounding areas. Applications for 2026 had to be emailed to sidockscholarship@gmail.com by June 1, 2026, and the date for the next round is not posted yet. When you apply, ask the Sudbury Community Foundation how and when you will hear back — whether by email, phone, or a portal. The recipient is a student who shows outstanding contributions to their community through volunteering and fundraising, consistently puts forth their personal best, and shows a positive attitude and strong work ethic. Examples of financial need are considered but are not a determining factor. The money is applied directly to your tuition after you provide proof of registration. This means the funds go to the school rather than your bank account. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Sudbury Community Foundation whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a Canadian citizen attending a Canadian educational institution. The 2026 application form asks for your current school, W.C. Eaket or École Secondaire Catholique Jeunesse-Nord, and the post-secondary school you plan to attend. This award specifically targets students who have made outstanding contributions to the local community in Blind River and surrounding areas through volunteerism, leadership, and fundraising. While you can provide examples of financial need, these are considered but are not a determining factor in the final decision.

  • ReferencesAvoid using family members as your referees. Instead, ask a teacher, a local business owner, or a leader from a non-profit organization to write your letter of support. Ensure they can speak to your work ethic and positive attitude.
  • StrategyAvoid sending a generic application. Instead, tailor your responses to show your deep connection to the Blind River area. Mention specific local events or groups you helped.
  • RealismAvoid leaning on financial need alone. Instead, focus your energy on proving your community involvement, since financial need is considered but is not a determining factor.
