About this award

The award is worth up to $3,500 and is sent directly to your college or university for your use. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a secondary school student of Afro-Canadian or African descent who has made a meaningful contribution to your school and community. Applications are accepted from April 1 to July 31: your form, a principal's report and your reference letters must reach the Sudbury Community Foundation by July 31. When you apply, ask how and when you'll hear back. Winners are chosen by a committee made up of an educator, members of the Afro-Heritage Association and the participating Afro-Canadian group of Sudbury, and a member of the Sudbury Community Foundation. The fund may be presented to one or two students. Winners receive the award at a yearly ceremony, with a personalized certificate. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Sudbury Community Foundation whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a Canadian citizen and a resident of Greater Sudbury or North Eastern Ontario. This award is for secondary school students of Afro-Canadian or African descent who are applying to a post-secondary institution in the current year. You must show that you have contributed to your school and community life. The fund's page also asks that you be between 16 and 25 and plan to study full time after high school. While not required, scholastic achievement is an asset and financial need may be considered.

  • Community LeadershipAvoid just listing the clubs you joined. Instead, describe one specific way your contribution improved your school or neighborhood. Write about the actual impact you had on others.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting for your school board to announce the award. Instead, download the forms from the Sudbury Community Foundation website now to get a head start on the 300-word question about your dreams and how the award may help others.
  • RealismAvoid assuming you will win based on grades alone. Instead, remember that scholastic achievement is only an asset, while contributing to school and community life is a requirement. Focus your application on your service.
