About this award

You can receive $750. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a nursing student of Indigenous heritage who has dedicated your time to serving an Indigenous community. You must apply by June 1st annually. When you apply, ask RRC Polytech (Red River College Polytechnic) how and when you will hear back — whether by email, phone, or through the application portal. Selection criteria aren't published — ask RRC Polytech (Red River College Polytechnic) how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask RRC Polytech (Red River College Polytechnic) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with RRC Polytech (Red River College Polytechnic) whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a nursing student of Indigenous heritage currently in the 3rd year of the BN (Bachelor of Nursing) Program. You must have a cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.5 and a documented record of community service to an Indigenous community.

Tips for applying

  • Community ServiceAvoid just listing the organizations where you volunteered. Instead, describe the specific impact your work had on the Indigenous community you served. Provide a concrete example of a project you led or a person you helped.
  • ReferencesAvoid using a general character reference. Instead, ask a leader from the Indigenous community where you volunteered to write your letter. Ensure they explicitly describe your service activities.
  • StrategyAvoid forgetting to name the award on your form. Instead, clearly write "Karen Wall Indigenous Nursing Student Award" on the General RRC Polytech Application so your file goes to the right committee.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the application is finished after the main form. Instead, remember that you must also submit a supplemental form from the Nursing Repository and proof of your ancestry to be considered.
