About this award

You can receive a share of $5,000, as this amount is allocated to one or more recipients. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are passionate about flight and are pursuing education in an aviation related field, such as earning a pilot license, obtaining ratings and endorsements, or studying avionics and air traffic services. You must submit your application through the portal by May 31 at 11:59 PM MT. The portal opens on April 2 at 12:01 AM MT. You will generally hear back and receive funding in mid-to-late July. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Yellowknife Community Foundation how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Yellowknife Community Foundation during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Yellowknife Community Foundation whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a resident of the Northwest Territories for at least twelve consecutive months. You must also be pursuing education in an aviation related field, including but not limited to a pilot license, ratings and endorsements, avionics, or air traffic services.

  • Field of StudyAvoid giving a vague description of your schooling. Instead, list the specific aviation credentials you are pursuing, such as a particular rating or endorsement. Mention exactly how this funding helps you reach your flight goals.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the last minute to create your account. Instead, set up your profile on the Yellowknife Community Foundation portal as soon as it opens on April 2. This gives you plenty of time to complete the eligibility quiz.
