About this award

You can receive a $1,000 award. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a community-minded student who balances your studies with activities like local business, social justice groups, or arts and theatre. You must apply through the portal between April 2 and May 31 (Mountain Time). You will likely hear back in mid-to-late July when the Yellowknife Community Foundation distributes the funding. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Yellowknife Community Foundation how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Yellowknife Community Foundation during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Yellowknife Community Foundation whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a resident of the Northwest Territories for at least twelve consecutive months. You must be pursuing post-secondary studies or trades educations in any field. You also need to be involved in multiple community activities, such as recreation clubs, local businesses, social justice groups, or arts, theatre, and music. Priority will be granted to first generation immigrants, 2SLGBTQ+ (two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and plus) people, and people of colour.

Tips for applying

  • Community InvolvementAvoid just listing the names of the groups you belong to. Instead, describe the specific impact you had while volunteering with a local business or social justice group. List the specific roles you held in those activities.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the last minute to create your account. Instead, set up your profile on the Yellowknife Community Foundation portal as soon as it opens on April 2. This gives you plenty of time to complete the eligibility quiz without rushing.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that being a resident is enough to win. Instead, focus your application on showing how you embody the legacy of community engagement and inclusion. Highlight your work with diverse groups to match the priority goals of the fund.
