About this award

You can receive a total of $16,000, which is paid as $4,000 renewable over four years. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you have demonstrated leadership qualities, show financial need, and have taken a recognized initiative to fund your own education. You must submit your application by March 1. Contact Mount Allison University at financialaid@mta.ca to confirm when you will be notified of the results. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Mount Allison University how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds, though they only offer 2 of these awards at Mount Allison. Ask Mount Allison University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this scholarship, you must maintain a course load of 30 credits between fall and winter terms and meet these GPA (Grade Point Average — a number that represents your average grade) requirements: 1.7 GPA in your first year, 2.7 GPA in your second year, and 3.0 GPA in both your third and fourth years.

Who qualifies

You must have an 80% average for your first term of Grade 12, based on university preparatory courses. You must also show financial need, leadership qualities and a recognized initiative in funding your own education, and be an entering student who graduated from a high school in Canada. A preference is given to Canadian citizens and/or permanent residents of Canada.

Tips for applying

  • Personal StatementAvoid writing a generic list of your achievements. Instead, tell a specific story about a recognized initiative you started to fund your own education. Describe the steps you took to raise the money.
  • ReferencesAvoid using references who only know you casually. Instead, choose people who can speak specifically to your leadership qualities. Ask your referees to provide concrete examples of when you led a team or project.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the last minute to coordinate your documents. Instead, start your personal essay and request your two letters of recommendation early. Submit everything by the March 1 deadline to ensure your file is complete.
  • RealismAvoid counting on this award because of your grades. Instead, remember that only 2 of these are offered at Mount Allison. Focus on highlighting your unique leadership and financial initiatives to stand out.
