About this award

You can receive a scholarship valued at $30,000 CAD. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. Nuffield Canada awards up to six scholarships per year to Canadians. This is for you if you are a mid-career professional in agriculture who is passionate about developing global perspectives and leadership skills through experiential travel. Applications open May 1 and the deadline is June 30 each year. Qualifying applicants may be interviewed in July or August, and the successful scholars are announced in early September. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Nuffield Canada how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. There is no tuition involved: the scholarship funds your own self-directed travel and study. Ask Nuffield Canada how and when the money is paid out. As a Nuffield Scholar, you must attend the mandatory scholar orientation at the Nuffield Canada AGM in late November and complete a travel program of no less than 10 weeks within a 2-year timeframe, with at least six weeks of consecutive travel. You must also write a formal written report of approximately 10,000 words, present your research at the Nuffield Canada AGM (Annual General Meeting — the yearly gathering of members), and share your findings as speakers or panelists within your industry for at least 12 months.

Who qualifies

You must be a Canadian between the ages of 25-50 (ish) who is mid-career and passionate about agriculture. This includes any role in primary production, industry, or governance, such as owners, managers, employees, administrators, or bureaucrats. Eligible fields of agriculture include food, fibre, health care, biofuels, forestry, aquaculture, and fisheries. All industry philosophies are welcome, including commercial, organic, cottage, medicinal, and Indigenous approaches.

• RealismAvoid ignoring the reporting requirements. Instead, prepare yourself for the workload of a 10,000-word formal report. Treat this as a professional commitment similar to a Masters thesis.
