About this award

You can receive $2,500. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. Two recipients are chosen for this amount each year. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student dedicated to providing compassionate care in the healthcare field. You must apply through the portal between April 2 and May 31 (Mountain Time). You will hear back in mid-to-late July when funding is distributed to the recipients. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Yellowknife Community Foundation how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Yellowknife Community Foundation during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Yellowknife Community Foundation whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Tips for applying

  • Field of StudyAvoid giving a generic overview of your interest in healthcare. Instead, talk about why you chose nursing or personal support work and how you plan to provide compassionate care. Mention any specific experiences that drew you to these roles.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the end of May to start your profile. Instead, create your account on the Yellowknife Community Foundation portal as soon as it opens on April 2. This gives you plenty of time to complete the eligibility quiz without rushing.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed fund since only two people receive it each year. Instead, treat this as a helpful addition to your financial plan while you apply for other nursing and healthcare bursaries. Diversify your applications to increase your chances of funding.
