What you will need

• ✓ Online application form, with one PDF file (maximum 10 MB) attached, submitted before the deadline

About this award

You can receive one of two funding options. The Université de Sherbrooke Research Excellence Scholarships provide $17,000 per year for 2 years ($34,000 total). The Laurent and Claire B. Beaudoin Excellence Scholarships provide $25,000 per year for 2 years ($50,000 total). This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving master's student—including international students—who wants to focus entirely on research without financial stress. You have two deadlines each year: September 1st at 11:59 pm for the Fall competition and March 1st at 11:59 pm for the Winter competition. The online form opens a month before each deadline (August 1 and February 1). You will usually hear if you were selected, placed on a waiting list, or not selected via an email sent a few weeks after the deadline. Selection is based on the excellence of your application, which is evaluated by committees of Université de Sherbrooke professors. Rankings and committee comments are not shared with applicants. The scholarship is paid to you in equal payments every two weeks over up to 6 semesters. The total can be less than the maximum depending on your status and when in your program the payments start. To keep receiving payments, you must stay enrolled full time in a research-based graduate program at Université de Sherbrooke, spend most of your time on research, and be domiciled in Quebec. If you win an external scholarship, you must tell the Graduate Scholarship Programs Coordinator, and your award may be cancelled or its payments changed.

Who qualifies

You are eligible if you are enrolled in, admitted to, or applying to a research-based master's program at Université de Sherbrooke, in any discipline (course-based paths are not eligible). You need a GPA above 3.0/4.3 (B) or equivalent in the program your admission is based on, unless the committee finds your achievements exceptional. International students are eligible under the same conditions as Canadian citizens and permanent residents. If you are already enrolled, you can apply only while you are within your first three semesters of the program (S1, S2 or S3) at the competition deadline. You may apply only once for a master's program.

• InnovationAvoid describing your project in purely academic terms. Instead, highlight the high innovation potential of your work, especially if you are targeting the Laurent and Claire B. Beaudoin award. Clearly explain why your research is a breakthrough.
• SupportAvoid submitting your application without reviewing the official program guidelines. Instead, download the PDF guidelines for the current competition, and talk to your research supervisor before you apply.
• StrategyAvoid ignoring other funding sources. Instead, look for external scholarships to pair with this one. Remember that you must notify the Graduate Scholarship Programs Coordinator if you get outside funding, as it may change your institutional award.
• RealismAvoid counting on a spot on the waiting list. Instead, treat it as a possibility. Understand that you only move up if another student cancels their award because they received a larger external scholarship.
