What you will need

About this award

You can receive one of two funding options. Through the Université de Sherbrooke Research Excellence Scholarships, you get $20,000 per year for 3 years, totaling $60,000. If you win the Laurent and Claire B. Beaudoin Excellence Scholarships, you get $35,000 per year for 3 years, totaling $105,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a doctoral student in any discipline who stands out for the excellence of your application. The Beaudoin award specifically targets you if your research project has high innovation potential. You have two opportunities to apply each year. The Fall competition deadline is September 1st at 11:59 pm, and the Winter competition deadline is March 1st at 11:59 pm. You will usually hear if you were selected, placed on a waiting list, or not selected via an email sent a few weeks after the deadline. Committees of Université de Sherbrooke professors evaluate the applications. Note that rankings and committee comments are not disclosed to students. The scholarship is paid to you in equal payments every two weeks over up to 9 semesters. If you obtain an external scholarship, you must notify the Graduate Scholarship Programs Coordinator in Student Services, as this may modify or cancel your institutional funding. To keep receiving payments, you must stay enrolled full time in a research-based graduate program at Université de Sherbrooke, spend most of your time on research, and be domiciled in Quebec. Keep in mind that you can only apply for a doctoral program scholarship once.

Who qualifies

You must be enrolled in, admitted to, or applying to a research-based doctoral program at Université de Sherbrooke; it is open to all disciplines. You need a GPA above 3.0/4.3 (B) or equivalent in the program your admission is based on, unless the committee finds your achievements exceptional. International students are eligible under the same conditions as Canadian citizens and permanent residents. If you are already enrolled, you can apply only while you are within your first three semesters of the program (S1, S2 or S3) at the competition deadline.

• Research StatementAvoid writing a generic project overview. Instead, emphasize the high innovation potential of your work if you are targeting the Beaudoin award. Clearly define what makes your research a breakthrough in your field.
• SupportAvoid leaving the commitment form to the last minute. Instead, settle your research direction early — the form must be signed by all parties when you apply. Ask your supervisor which competition suits your file best.
• StrategyAvoid applying for the same degree level multiple times. Instead, focus all your effort on a single, high-quality application since you can only apply once for a doctoral program. Review the program guidelines thoroughly before hitting submit.
• RealismAvoid counting on a spot if you are placed on the waiting list. Instead, realize that your award depends on other students declining their spots due to external funding. Continue searching for other grants while you wait.
