About this award

You can receive $5,000 per year for up to four years of undergraduate studies. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. Additionally, some of the Opportunity Awards will also cover first-year residence fees at Victoria College. This is for you if you have demonstrated financial need and belong to an identified priority community, such as an underrepresented or at-risk group. There is no separate application: candidates are chosen from the Victoria College Admissions Student Profile, which you fill in through the Join U of T portal. No profile deadline is posted on the award page, so check the date shown in your Join U of T portal. Winners are chosen based on the information you provide in the Victoria College Admissions Student Profile and through finalist interviews. Between 10 and 15 award recipients are selected annually. Ask University of Toronto (Victoria College) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. The award renews for your second, third and fourth years if you keep the academic status of "In Good Standing".

Who qualifies

You must be a newly admitted Victoria College (University of Toronto) student with financial need who comes from an identified priority community, such as an underrepresented or at-risk group.

Tips for applying

  • Student ProfileAvoid giving brief or one-word answers in your admissions profile. Instead, provide detailed examples of your experiences and challenges. Use specific stories to show why you belong to a priority community.
  • InterviewsAvoid focusing only on your grades during the finalist interview. Instead, talk about your goals and how this support will help you succeed. Practice answering questions about your background and aspirations.
  • StrategyAvoid treating the admissions profile as a formality. Instead, view it as your primary tool to demonstrate your financial need and community identity. Spend extra time refining your responses before submitting.
  • RealismAvoid assuming you will get this award just because you meet the basic criteria. Instead, remember that only 10 to 15 students are chosen each year. Apply for other bursaries at the same time to secure your funding.
