What you will need

  • A letter of offer or acceptance to a full-time program at a college, trade school or university
  • A summary of your 4-H and community involvement
  • A 500-word essay (include the word count) on one of two topics: how we can make positive change in our local communities, or whether technology in agriculture is making positive changes to local communities and the environment
  • Consent for John Deere Canada and 4-H Canada to use your name, photo, province, school and area of study to promote the scholarship (the form is in the application)
  • If you win: a headshot photo, proof of acceptance and your social insurance number before funds are released

About this award

You can receive a $1,000 scholarship. There are 15 of these awards available. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a 4-H member who is planning your transition to higher education. The 2026 round opened April 1 and closed June 1, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET), and winners were told in July. 4-H Canada offers these scholarships every year, so check its scholarships page in the spring for the next round's dates. A selection committee judges your essay, your 4-H involvement (years, positions held and projects completed), your community involvement, your good standing in a Canadian 4-H club, and how well you follow instructions and meet deadlines. In 2026 the 15 awards were split by province: BC 1, AB 3, SK 2, MB 2, ON 2, QC 1, NB 1, NS 1, PE 1, NL 1. Before the money is released, winners must send a headshot photo, proof of acceptance and their social insurance number. Ask 4-H Canada how the money will reach you so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with 4-H Canada and John Deere whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a current 4-H member in good standing and a Canadian resident. In the 2026 round you had to be at least 16 by January 1, 2026, and be in your final year of high school or CEGEP, or an undergraduate student, planning to start a full-time degree, certificate or trade-based program at a Canadian college, trade school or university in September 2026.

  • RealismAvoid counting on this award alone, since there are only 15 across the whole country. Instead, apply for several other local and national bursaries to diversify your funding. Create a spreadsheet of all your deadlines to ensure you don't miss any.
