About this award

The Alberta Centennial Award (formerly the Alberta Centennial Scholarship) is a Government of Alberta award for high school students who have already been selected for the Premier's Citizenship Award (formerly the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Citizenship Award). The award provides $2,005 to 25 selected students per year. Note: this is not a general high school scholarship. To be considered, you must first be selected by your high school for the Premier's Citizenship Award (a separate competitive program recognising Alberta high school seniors for civic engagement and leadership), then upon enrolling full-time in post-secondary studies (fall or winter intake) you become eligible for the Centennial Award. The application is auto-considered if you applied for the Premier's Citizenship Award and indicated post-secondary plans. The 2026 intake has closed and the 2027 intake opens March 1, 2027; the closing date is not posted yet. Submitted via Alberta's GATE Front Office online portal.

Who qualifies

You qualify for the Alberta Centennial Award if you (1) are an Alberta high school student who has been selected by your school for the Premier's Citizenship Award (your school nominates and selects); (2) enrol full-time in a post-secondary program (Alberta or elsewhere in Canada) for the fall or winter intake; (3) are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person. Because of this two-step selection, most Alberta high school students are not eligible.

Tips for applying

If you're considering this award, the action is at the Premier's Citizenship Award stage — talk to your school's principal or guidance counsellor early in Grade 12 about being nominated for that program. If you've been selected for Premier's Citizenship Award, the Centennial Award follows automatically when you indicate your post-secondary plans (no separate competitive selection). If you haven't been selected for Premier's Citizenship Award, the Centennial Award is not the right scholarship to pursue — look at the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship instead (sibling Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund-administered award; tiered by Grade 10/11/12 grades; far broader eligibility).
