About this award

You can receive between $10,000 and $18,000 per year, for a total value of $40,000 to $72,000 over four years. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are entering first year at Queen's, have maintained a 90% average in high school, have financial need, and have a strong record of leadership and community involvement. You must submit the Major Admission Award (MAA) application on SOLUS by December 8, 2026; apply for admission through OUAC by November 20 so you get your SOLUS login in time. You will find out if you won the award in late February by checking your SOLUS (Student Online University System — the secure portal for your student records) Student Centre. Selection is based on a mix of your financial need, academic ability, leadership, and how involved you are in your school and community. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask Queen's University how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Queen's University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this award for the full four years, you must achieve a GPA (Grade Point Average — a number that summarizes your overall academic achievement) of 3.5 in a full course load each year. Queen's sends recipients further information about renewal criteria.

Who qualifies

You must be entering the first year of any program at Queen's University. You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a Protected Person (someone with refugee or protected-person status in Canada). You can attend high school in Canada or internationally, and you can still apply if you are taking a gap year. To be competitive, you should have high school grades of 90% or higher, and financial need is part of the selection. Please note that if you win this award, you will not be eligible for other merit-based scholarships at the university.

Tips for applying

  • Academic RecordsAvoid submitting multiple copies of the same grades. Instead, provide one clean set of transcripts that shows your cumulative average is 90% or higher. Check your SOLUS portal to ensure all documents are uploaded correctly.
  • SupportAvoid waiting until the last minute to gather signatures. Instead, ask your school official to sign your November grades or unofficial transcripts early. Give your teachers at least a week's notice to get these documents ready.
  • StrategyAvoid guessing what the reviewers want to see in your application. Instead, use the practice application available in early October to prepare your answers. This allows you to refine your stories of leadership and community work before the posted deadline.
  • RealismAvoid assuming an early offer of admission means you missed out on the money. Instead, remember that major admission awards are processed separately. Wait until late February to check your SOLUS account for the final result.
