About this award

You can receive a $5,000 Canadian scholarship for one academic year. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. There are twelve (12) scholarships available in total. This is for you if you are passionate about the future of Canadian agriculture and food production and are starting your first post-secondary program. You must submit your online application by May 14, 2026, at 1PM EST. You will receive the results of the selection process by email, and successful applicants will receive their confirmation in August. A committee of Canadian university and college representatives, chosen by SPC (Scholarship Partners Canada — the organization that administers the award), selects the winners. They look at your academic performance, your volunteer or community work in agriculture, your references, and your essay. Selection criteria aren't published in detail, so ask Bayer CropScience Inc. how many applicants they typically receive to judge your odds. The money is sent to you via EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer — a direct digital payment) to a Canadian bank account in your name. This payment happens after you complete the acceptance process and submit your documents, which can take 6 to 8 weeks. Note that you should pay your tuition on time regardless of when the money arrives, as your school will reimburse you according to their usual rules. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Bayer CropScience Inc. whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must have Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status in Canada by the application deadline. You must be planning to start full-time studies in your first bachelor's degree or diploma program at a Canadian institution with recognized degree or diploma granting powers (such as universities, colleges, or CEGEP technical diplomas). Your program of study must be in agriculture, food science, or culinary programs as accepted by Bayer CropScience Inc. and must last at least two years. University preparatory programs, like CEGEP pre-university diplomas, are not eligible. A preference will be given to two (2) applicants of Canadian Indigenous heritage. If you start your studies in January, you can apply during the summer competition of that same year.

Tips for applying

  • EssayAvoid writing a generic response about farming. Instead, focus on the specific role you will personally play in helping Canadian farmers feed the world sustainably. Ensure your essay is between 300-500 words and strictly follows the Arial 10pt double-spaced formatting rules.
  • ReferencesAvoid using family members as your referees. Instead, ask a teacher, coach, or community leader who is unrelated to you to fill out both the personal and nominational testimonial forms.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting for your official acceptance letter to apply. Since you can apply before being accepted, submit your materials now to meet the May 14 deadline, but keep your acceptance letter ready for the August confirmation stage.
  • RealismAvoid ignoring the preference for Indigenous applicants. Because two of the twelve awards are prioritized for those of Canadian Indigenous heritage, ensure you provide your validation of indigeneity if you identify as such to ensure you are considered for those specific slots.
