About this award

Depending on your rank in the competition, you will receive a grant that does not have to be paid back: 1st place gets $2,000, 2nd place gets $1,500, and 3rd place gets $1,000. This money is paid in two equal instalments during your academic year, and the amount is first applied to any fees you owe the university. This is for you if you are a talented French speaker from Nova Scotia who has excelled in the CPF (Canadian Parents for French — the national organization promoting French-language education) public speaking contest. Winners are announced during the competition itself. No separate application deadline is posted publicly for the scholarship because it is linked to the contest; you should visit ns.cpf.ca to find the current dates for the Nova Scotia competition. Selection is automatic. If you place in the top three of the Nova Scotia Concours d’art oratoire CPF (public speaking competition) in the early immersion, late immersion, core/extended/enriched/advanced French, or core French categories, you are chosen. Ask Université de Moncton during your registration how the remaining balance of your award will reach you after the initial tuition deduction — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. This is award and is non-renewable. To keep the funding, you must remain registered full time at one of the three Université de Moncton campuses; the scholarship is terminated if you decide to leave the university.

Who qualifies

You must place in the top three of the Nova Scotia Concours d’art oratoire CPF (public speaking competition) in one of these categories: early immersion, late immersion, core/extended/enriched/advanced French, or core French. You must be enrolling for the first time in an undergraduate program and be registered full time at one of the Université de Moncton's three campuses. You cannot receive this award if you are attending the university as part of a student mobility program. Also, you cannot combine this scholarship with the National concours d’art oratoire Canadian Parents for French.

Tips for applying

  • Public SpeakingAvoid reading your speech from a script. Instead, use a few bullet points to guide your thoughts so you can maintain eye contact with the judges. Practice your delivery in front of a mirror to improve your gestures.
  • SupportAvoid practicing alone. Instead, ask a French teacher or a fluent speaker to critique your pronunciation and pacing. Record yourself on your phone to hear where you sound hesitant.
  • StrategyAvoid focusing only on the words. Instead, focus on the emotion and rhythm of the French language to engage the audience. Study previous winning speeches to see how they structured their arguments.
  • RealismAvoid assuming you will win the scholarship just for entering. Instead, remember that only the top three finishers in each category receive these funds. Focus on the experience of the competition first.
