About this award

You can receive $5,000. The bursary may be continued for 3 years of full-time enrolment if you stay in good academic standing and still show financial need. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a First Nations, Métis or Inuit student facing real financial barriers, starting university at Carleton for the first time, and you have worked to overcome obstacles to get here. The deadline is October 31. Carleton's page has application forms for both 2026-27 and 2027-28, so use the one for your year. Email the completed form and all documents to Awards and Financial Aid at awards@carleton.ca. Late or incomplete applications are not considered. Preference goes to students who have limited or no other funding for their studies. Carleton does not post how many bursaries it gives each year, so ask Awards and Financial Aid (613-520-3600) if you want to judge your odds. Recipients are invited to join a mentorship program in their first year and are encouraged to become mentors later on. Ask Awards and Financial Aid how the money is paid, whether to you or to your student account. Carleton also has awards only for students in its Indigenous Enriched Support Program (IESP), such as the Biindigen Bursary, the Kelly Family Award and the Syer-Torrance Inspiration Awards. Those are given on the program's recommendation, so ask the IESP about them if you are in it.

Who qualifies

You must be an Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) student who has applied and been offered admission to an undergraduate degree program at Carleton University. You must be entering the first year of your program full time, studying after high school for the first time, and starting university no more than three years after finishing high school. You must show financial need through the application form, and show community involvement and resilience in your pursuit of post-secondary education. Carleton asks for documents confirming your Indigenous identity under its policy for awards limited to Indigenous candidates.

  • ReferenceAvoid asking someone who barely knows you. Instead, choose a person who can speak to how you meet the eligibility rules and show the values of this award, such as resilience and community involvement.
