About this award

For a doctorate, the Commitment (Engagement) stream pays a total of $30,000 ($5,000 per session, for up to 6 sessions). This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. Note that this award does not cover the total cost of one year of study in Quebec, including your tuition and living expenses. This is for you if you are an international student who has submitted a new application for admission to a Université Laval doctorate starting in the winter, summer or fall 2027 session, and you stand out for exceptional involvement and altruism in one or more areas of activity. The online form opens November 2, 2026 and closes January 15, 2027, and the person supporting your application (your referee) must submit their section by January 20, 2027. You can open the form only once your admission application has been processed and the admission fee paid. Results are sent by email in early March, and every applicant gets an answer. If you are selected, you must have officially received a conditional or final offer of admission from the university. Once you receive the offer, you have exactly 15 days to accept the university's admission offer, pay your required tuition deposit, and accept the scholarship offer, or the award will be automatically withdrawn. Applications are judged on your involvement and engagement (volunteering, time given to an organisation or project, recent and long-term commitment), your outlook as a citizen of the world, your leadership, and your academic record and the quality of your application. The money is paid to you by direct deposit or cheque after the deadline to drop courses with a refund in each session. You must hold a valid study permit when the payments are made. The award renews each year for the official length of your program as long as you meet the renewal conditions, including staying enrolled full-time in the fall and winter sessions.

Who qualifies

You must be an international student who has submitted a new application for admission to a regular doctoral program at Université Laval for the winter, summer or fall 2027 session. You must stand out for exceptional involvement and altruism in one or more areas of activity, stay enrolled full-time throughout your program (fall and winter sessions), and hold a valid study permit when the payments are made. If you need to apply for your first study permit, working with a regulated immigration consultant is required.

Tips for applying

  • EngagementAvoid simply listing the organizations you joined. Instead, describe the specific impact your actions had on your community. Provide a concrete example of a project you led.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until you are admitted to prepare your materials. Instead, align your engagement descriptions with the university's goal of recruiting global leaders. Start the form as soon as it opens on November 2, 2026, since questions to the scholarships office can take a few days to answer.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this award covers all your costs. Instead, visit the Université Laval Cost of Study and Budget page to calculate your remaining financial gap. Plan for additional funding sources to cover your full tuition and living expenses in Quebec.
