About this award

You can receive one of several scholarships of $5,000 each. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. It is paid as a single installment during the winter session. This is for you if you are a doctoral student in the final stages of your program who needs financial support to focus on writing your thesis or doctoral dissertation. The 2026 competition is closed: applications are no longer accepted, and its results will be announced in early December 2026. The next competition is planned for autumn 2027, and its dates are not posted yet — check the award's official page before you apply. Université Laval notes that this scholarship may not be offered every year. Winners are chosen based on the progress of your research project and how realistic your proposed timeline is. They also look at how much the financial support will help you dedicate yourself to writing. Priority will be given to those planning to perform an initial deposit in 2027, and the school ensures a fair representation of disciplines among the winners. Ask Université Laval during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep the award, you must be registered full-time in your doctoral program at the time you receive the payment. You can receive this scholarship only once.

Who qualifies

These are the rules of the 2026 competition; check the dates again when the autumn 2027 competition opens. You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or an international student enrolled in any doctoral program at Université Laval. To qualify, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.33 at the doctoral level and have passed your doctoral exam by the end of the autumn 2025 session or earlier. You must satisfy all program requirements at the time of application, though you can explain in the form how you will meet any remaining requirements before your initial deposit. You must maintain a full-time registration status at Université Laval (or be deemed full-time by the Aide financière aux études — the provincial student financial assistance agency) during the autumn 2026 session. If you are studying part-time (between 6 and 11 credits) but are recognized as a student parent, you may still be eligible if you complete the necessary steps with the Registrar's Office. You must not have performed the initial deposit of your thesis or doctoral dissertation for evaluation before January 15, 2027. Additionally, you cannot be receiving a scholarship from a federal or provincial granting agency in autumn 2026, such as SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council), NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council), CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research), or the FRQ (Fonds de recherche du Québec). Finally, you must not have received this scholarship previously. International students must be studying in Canada and hold a valid study permit when the payment is made.

Tips for applying

  • TimelineAvoid giving a vague estimate of when you will finish. Instead, provide a realistic and detailed schedule showing exactly when you will complete each chapter and perform your initial deposit. Create a calendar of milestones to attach to your application.
  • StrategyAvoid ignoring the impact of the money. Instead, clearly explain how this $5,000 allows you to reduce other work or obligations to focus exclusively on your writing. Describe the specific hours of writing time this funding buys you.
  • RealismAvoid claiming you can finish your entire thesis in a few weeks if your progress suggests otherwise. Instead, align your proposed timeline with your actual state of advancement. Be honest about where you are in the process so the committee trusts your plan.
