Cochlear Graeme Clark Scholarship

What you will need

• ✓ Online application with three letters of reference (at least two from a teacher or someone who gave you academic instruction) and a personal statement, submitted by September 30
• ✓ Proof of citizenship in the United States or Canada
• ✓ Details of your Cochlear Nucleus implant (type and month/year first implanted)
• ✓ Official transcripts showing a 3.0 GPA (unweighted) or above
• ✓ Official transcripts submitted within 60 days of school year completion (no later than June 30) for payment

About this award

You can receive $2,000 USD per year for up to four consecutive years. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a citizen of the United States or Canada and a recipient of a Cochlear Nucleus implant. (Baha and Osia recipients apply for the Anders Tjellström Scholarship instead.) You must submit your application online by September 30 each year. You will hear the decision from the Scholarship Selection Committee via email no later than January 31. At least six Academic Scholarships are awarded based on your academic achievement and your commitment to leadership and humanity. Internal committees conduct two reviews, and a final committee of external hearing healthcare professionals selects the winners. They also look at your community involvement and extracurricular activities. The money is paid in annual installments after you complete each year of study. Cochlear pays the scholarship directly to you. You must maintain a 3.0 GPA (unweighted) or above to keep the scholarship. Since you can only receive this scholarship one time, confirm with Cochlear Americas if there are other opportunities for returning students.

Who qualifies

You must be a citizen of the United States or Canada and a recipient of a Cochlear Nucleus implant (Baha and Osia recipients apply for the Anders Tjellström Scholarship instead). This is open to graduated high school seniors, as well as undergraduate or graduate students who have applied to or will be enrolled in an accredited college or university. You must have a 3.0 GPA (unweighted) or above from your current academic institution to apply and to keep the award. You cannot apply if you or a family member are employees of Cochlear.

Tips for applying

• Community InvolvementAvoid just listing your clubs and sports. Instead, describe a specific time your leadership helped others in your community. Write about one concrete project where you made a difference.
• ReferencesYou need three letters of reference, and at least two must be from a teacher or someone who has given you academic instruction. Choose people who can speak to your humanity and leadership, not only your grades. Ask them to provide a specific example of your character.
• StrategyAvoid submitting a partial application. Instead, ensure every section is finished before the September 30 deadline. Double-check that your online portal submission is marked as complete.
• RealismAvoid assuming grades alone will win the award. Instead, remember that at least six awards are given and competition is based on both GPA and extracurriculars. Focus your essay on your personal growth and impact.
