Dalhousie In-Course Scholarship

What you will need

About this award

Most in-course scholarships typically range from $500 to $2,000. However, the Aramark Leadership Awards offer several awards of $4,000 each, and the W. Andrew MacKay Alumni Scholarships provide several awards valued between $1,500–$3,000, though these amounts vary each year. As these are scholarships, not loans, you do not have to pay this money back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving undergraduate student at Dalhousie University who maintains a strong grade point average or takes an active role in leading and helping your campus community. For general in-course awards, assessments happen in September. The Aramark Leadership Awards typically close in late November, though you should check the official page for the exact date. Nominations for the W. Andrew MacKay Alumni Scholarships are typically planned for January. Ask Dalhousie University when and how you will be notified of a decision. General in-course awards are decided automatically based on your grades from the previous year. The Aramark awards involve an application process. For the W. Andrew MacKay Alumni Scholarships, you must be nominated by your department head, dean, or school director. Meeting the minimum for in-course awards does not mean you will get one: how many are given, and their value, depend on available funding and how many students qualify. Your in-course scholarship is applied to your next year of study. For example, if you qualify based on your second-year results, you receive the funding in your third year. Ask Dalhousie University during your application if the money is sent as a tuition credit or a direct payment so you can plan your cash flow. To receive the funding, you must be registered full-time. You are considered for in-course scholarships again each year, based on your grades from the previous year.

Who qualifies

To qualify for general in-course awards, you must not already hold a renewable entrance scholarship, and you must complete at least 30 credit hours of Dalhousie coursework, take courses across two academic terms in the previous year, and achieve a minimum SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average — your average for a single term) of 3.70. Note that transfer credits are not included. For the Aramark Leadership Awards, you must be a full-time undergraduate in the previous year (at least two terms with minimum 9 credit hours per term) and currently registered full-time or on co-op in good academic standing. You must also show significant involvement in the Dalhousie community through leadership, citizenship, or sportsmanship. You must be in one of these faculties: Architecture & Planning, Arts & Social Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Health Professions, Management Science, or Dental Hygiene. For the W. Andrew MacKay Alumni Scholarships, you must be a registered full-time undergraduate with a minimum CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average — your overall average for all terms) of 3.30. Students at the University of King’s College and the Faculty of Agriculture are not eligible for this specific award.
