  • Two academic letters of reference, one from your proposed academic supervisor
  • To renew: a progress report (2 pages maximum), a transcript (unofficial is acceptable) and a letter from your senior supervisor confirming continued funding

About this award

If you are in an MSc (Master of Science) program, you receive $35,000 per year for up to two years. If you are in a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) program, you receive $30,000 per year for up to three years. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving researcher focused on sustainable agriculture or food systems that are clean, sustainable, and profitable. For the 2026-2027 competition, applications and annual renewal documents were due June 30, 2026, and late or incomplete applications were not considered. The next deadline is not posted yet. Applications go to the Faculty of Agriculture's Graduate Studies Office at gradagri@dal.ca. Recipients must show both academic and research excellence in sustainable agriculture and/or clean, sustainable and profitable food systems. Your reference letters are asked to comment on your academic excellence, your research potential, your proposed research, and your personal and interpersonal skills. Fees are not waived and must be paid out of the award. If you also hold other awards or funds, the Faculty of Agriculture caps your total at $50,000 a year from all sources. The scholarship is renewable at the Awards Committee's discretion, for up to two years for an MSc or three years for a PhD, if your annual progress review is satisfactory and you keep a first-class standing. To renew, you submit a progress report (2 pages maximum), a transcript (unofficial is fine) and a letter from your senior supervisor confirming continued funding by the one-year anniversary of the award.

Who qualifies

You must be in a program leading to the MSc in Agriculture or the PhD in Agricultural Sciences at Dalhousie University's Faculty of Agriculture, and you must have applied for, or completed no more than two semesters of, full-time study in that program. The 2026-2027 competition was open to graduate students registered full-time in the Faculty of Agriculture in Fall 2026. Your research must focus on sustainable agriculture or clean, sustainable, and profitable food systems, though this excludes any work involving animal husbandry.
