About this award

You get a total of $4,000, which is paid as $1,000 per year. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving student starting your first year of university in the arts. There is no application and no deadline: you are considered automatically when you are admitted to the Faculty of Arts. The scholarship is awarded during the summer before your studies begin. You are automatically considered for this award based on your admission average; no separate application is required. There are 10 of these renewable scholarships available. Selection criteria aren't published — ask University of Ottawa how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask University of Ottawa during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this scholarship for the three following years, you must remain enrolled full time at the Faculty of Arts. You also need to maintain a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average — your overall average across all courses) of 9.00 or higher at the end of a term in at least 24 units.

Who qualifies

You must be enrolled full time, and for the first time, in an undergraduate program at the Faculty of Arts. You need a minimum admission average of 90%. International students are also considered. Mature applicants and university transfers are not eligible for some University of Ottawa admission scholarships, so check with the university if that applies to you.

How to apply

  1. Read the award's official page

Tips for applying

  • Renewal AverageAvoid relying on a rounded-up average. Instead, remember that the University of Ottawa rounds the averages needed to keep or renew a scholarship to two decimal places, so an 8.49 will not meet an 8.50 requirement. Check that your CGPA stays at 9.00 or higher at the end of each term.
  • SupportAvoid waiting until the fall to check your status. Instead, monitor your uoAccess (the University of Ottawa's secure online portal for students) account during the summer. Set a calendar reminder for June and July to look for notifications.
  • StrategyAvoid assuming you are ineligible if you are an international student. Instead, apply to the program normally, as the source confirms all eligible students, including international students, are automatically considered.
  • RealismAvoid counting on this funding. Instead, remember there are only 10 of these awards available across the entire Faculty of Arts. Have a backup financial plan in place while you wait for the summer announcement.
