About this award

You can receive a $1,500 bursary. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. There are 3 of these awards available. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student starting your journey in an engineering program. You must apply between September 1 and October 15. No notification timeline is posted publicly — when you apply, ask Manitoba Hydro how and when you will hear back. Winners are chosen based on your academic performance, your home community, your financial need, and your community involvement. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask Manitoba Hydro how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Manitoba Hydro during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you are counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Manitoba Hydro whether it is a one-time award or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Tips for applying

  • Community InvolvementAvoid just listing the organizations you joined. Instead, describe one specific time your work helped your community. Write about the actual impact you made.
  • Financial NeedAvoid giving a vague statement that you need money. Instead, provide a clear breakdown of your current gaps in tuition or living costs. List the specific amounts you are missing.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed fund. Instead, remember that only 3 students will receive this $1,500. Apply for other bursaries at your school to diversify your options.
