About this award

You can win a cash prize of $2,500.00. This is a prize, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a student at the Mawji Centre (the hub for entrepreneurship and innovation at NAIT) who wants to launch a business idea. You must apply by February 12, 2027. When you apply, ask NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) how and when you will hear back—whether by email, phone, or the awards portal. Winners are chosen through a competition. First, you submit a video; then, the top 5 entries are invited to pitch their ideas to business professionals and investors. Attendees vote using a scoring sheet provided by Mawji Centre staff to determine the top three teams. Ask NAIT during your application how the money will reach you—some awards pay students directly, while others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed—if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with NAIT whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

This prize is open to all Mawji Centre students who participate in the "Pitch it to Me" competition. You can enter as part of a team consisting of 1-4 people. To win this specific prize, your team must be the 2nd place winner among the top three teams selected by the event attendees.

How to apply

  2. Submit your application

Save a copy, and submit at least a day before the deadline shown above.

Tips for applying

  • VideoAvoid making a long, rambling presentation. Instead, keep your business idea pitch strictly between 2 and 3 minutes. Record your video in a quiet space with clear lighting so the judges can focus on your idea.
  • SupportAvoid trying to build your entire business plan alone. Instead, lean on the resources at the Mawji Centre to refine your pitch. Schedule a meeting with a mentor to critique your video before you upload it.
  • StrategyAvoid focusing only on the technical side of your product. Instead, tailor your pitch to the business professionals and investors in the room by highlighting your market potential. Review the competition rubric if the Mawji Centre staff makes it available.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that a great video guarantees a win. Instead, remember that only the top 5 entries get to pitch live, and the final result depends on attendee voting. Treat the experience as a networking opportunity regardless of the outcome.
