About this award

You can receive a minimum of $1,000 from one of at least three bursaries issued on an annual basis. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are a young person from the Kentville area who wants to pursue post-secondary education and has a passion for supporting your community through emergency services. You must apply by June 4 at 6pm AST (Atlantic Standard Time). When you apply, ask Community Foundation of Nova Scotia how and when you'll hear back — whether by email, phone, or a portal. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Community Foundation of Nova Scotia how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. The money is sent directly to the post-secondary institution you attend. Confirm with Community Foundation of Nova Scotia if the funds are applied to your tuition account or issued as a refund check to you. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Community Foundation of Nova Scotia whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a young person wishing to attend a post-secondary education program. You must be from one of the following schools: Horton High School, Northeast Kings Education Centre, or Central Kings Rural High School. Additionally, you must show a demonstrated interest in the work of Nova Scotia’s first responders; this includes things like planning to enter a relevant field or having volunteered with a fire department, hospital, or police service.

Tips for applying

  • InterestAvoid just saying you like first responders. Instead, describe a specific time you volunteered with a hospital or police service to prove your interest. List the exact dates and roles you held.
  • StrategyAvoid focusing only on your financial need. Instead, emphasize how your goal of entering a first responder field matches the mission of the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department Society. Connect your personal goals to their community impact.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed award since there are at least three given annually. Instead, treat this as one part of your overall funding plan. Apply to other local Nova Scotia bursaries to increase your chances.
