About this award

You can receive $2,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a well-rounded student at Dartmouth High who balances your academics with sports, friendships, and a caring attitude toward others. You must apply by May 26. When you apply, ask the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, phone, or a student portal. The Dartmouth High scholarship committee chooses the winner based on how well you embody the qualities of the late naval officer Andrew Franklyn Webster. Selection criteria aren't published — ask the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. The scholarship is awarded once the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia has received proof that you have registered and are attending a post-secondary institution. Ask them during your application if the money goes directly to your bank account or to your school's tuition office so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you are counting on this for multiple years, confirm with the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia whether it is a one-time award or if you can apply again.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a graduating Grade 12 student at Dartmouth High who plans to attend an accredited post-secondary university or technical college in Canada. You must be an active participant in school sports, clubs, student council, and/or volunteer activities. You must also demonstrate a need for financial support to attend post-secondary education and show that you are friendly, compassionate, and caring to your fellow students.

Tips for applying

  • ExtracurricularsAvoid just listing the clubs you joined. Instead, describe one specific time your involvement in a sport or volunteer activity helped someone else. Mention a project or event you helped lead at Dartmouth High.
  • SupportAvoid writing a generic statement about being friendly. Instead, give a concrete example of how you supported a classmate or peer during a difficult time. Focus on your compassion and care for others.
  • StrategyAvoid sending a vague application. Instead, ensure you clearly link your personal qualities to the legacy of Andrew Franklyn Webster as an all-around student. Highlight your balance of grades, athletics, and social connections.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed award. Instead, remember that only one $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually. Check with your guidance counselor to see how many students typically apply from your grade.
