What you will need

  • No application required — this is an automatic award based on your admission average

About this award

You get a $3,000 scholarship. McMaster lists it as The McMaster University Entrance Award, and its notification schedule calls it the McMaster Award of Excellence. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving high school student entering the Engineering faculty who has met a very high academic threshold. You will be notified of your award in early February. Since this is an automatic award, there is no separate application deadline to track, but you must be admitted for September 2027. Winners are chosen automatically based on your final admission average. You are eligible if your average is 97.00% or higher. Note that admission averages are not rounded. The money is automatically credited to your student account in mid-September, after the add-drop deadline, to pay any fees you owe. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with McMaster University whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be admitted full-time on the basis of high school admission requirements and be entering Level 1 of your first baccalaureate degree program at McMaster University in September 2027. Specifically for the Engineering faculty, you must have a final admission average of 97.00% or higher. Please be aware that admission averages are not rounded. You can only receive either this Award of Excellence or the Faculty-specific Achievement Award; you cannot receive both.

Tips for applying

  • GradesAvoid assuming a rounded average will qualify you. Instead, ensure your exact calculated average meets the 97.00% threshold. Check your final transcripts carefully.
  • SupportAvoid ignoring your admission offer letters. Instead, look for notifications in early February regarding your scholarship status. Mark this date on your calendar.
  • StrategyAvoid worrying about a separate application process. Instead, focus on maintaining your final course grades, as your offer may be adjusted or cancelled if your average drops before August.
  • RealismAvoid expecting this award if your average is slightly below the cutoff. Instead, apply for McMaster's awards by application on AwardSpring, since Engineering has no Faculty-specific Achievement Award with a lower cut-off.
