About this award

You get $2,500.00. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student pursuing a trade in heavy equipment, automotive service, or industrial mechanics. You must apply by June 7, 2027. When you apply, ask NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) how and when you'll hear back — email, portal, or phone. Winners are chosen based on your written statement about your personal journey to post-secondary and your academic achievement. Selection criteria aren't published — ask NAIT how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask NAIT during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with NAIT whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be an Indigenous student enrolled in one of these apprenticeship programs: Heavy Equipment Technician, Automotive Service Technician, or Industrial Mechanic (Millwright). A preference will be given to women identifying students in period one who demonstrate financial need.

This is what the award's official page said when we last checked. Rules change, so confirm on the award's official page before you apply.

  • Open to trades students
  • Studying Heavy Equipment Technician, Automotive Service Technician or Industrial Mechanic (Millwright)

Tips for applying

  • StrategyAvoid relying solely on the General Application. Instead, submit a separate, detailed application through the awards portal to ensure you are fully considered. Double-check that your written statement is polished and complete.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the preference for women in period one guarantees the award. Instead, focus on clearly documenting your financial need if you fit that category. Treat this as a competitive process where your personal story makes the difference.
