About this award

You can receive a maximum of $15,000, which is broken down as $5,000 per term. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. The Government of Ontario funds two thirds of the award (up to $10,000 per year or $3,333 per term), and the University of Ottawa finances the remaining one third (up to $5,000 per year or $1,667 per term). You must hold the award for a minimum of two consecutive terms while maintaining full-time student status. Master's students can receive this for a maximum of two years, and doctoral students for a maximum of four years, though you cannot exceed a lifetime maximum of six years of government-funded student awards. This is for you if you are a high-achieving graduate student specializing in science and technology who is conducting research as part of your degree. You must apply by November 12, 2026, at 1 p.m. The Financial Aid and Awards Service emails results by early May, and you then have 21 days to accept or decline. Selection is merit-based, and each faculty has its own quota of awards, so you apply to the competition of the faculty where you would hold the scholarship. Note that the selection committee's decisions are final. Ask University of Ottawa during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. These awards are non-renewable, so to hold one in a later year you apply again in that year's competition, within the two-year master's and four-year doctoral limits.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or a Protected Person (if you have refugee or protected-person status in Canada) at the time you apply. You must be enrolled full-time, or expect to be enrolled full-time, in a graduate program at the University of Ottawa during the 2027-2028 academic year (May 2027 to April 2028). You must be in a research master's or doctoral program in science and technology disciplines, including applied sciences (like aerospace or chemical engineering), biological and life sciences (like biochemistry or genetics), physical sciences (like chemistry or physics), and medical or veterinary sciences. Academic requirements depend on your progress: if you have completed zero to twenty-four months of graduate studies by the deadline, you need a minimum average of at least A- (8.0/10) in each of your last two years of full-time equivalent study. If you are entering your third year or beyond (25 months or more), you need an overall average of at least A- (8.0/10) on all completed graduate courses. Timing restrictions apply: if you are in a master's program, you cannot have completed more than four terms by the time the award is paid. If you are in a PhD program, you cannot have completed more than thirteen terms by the disbursement date.

Tips for applying

  • SponsorshipAvoid assuming you must have a sponsor to apply. Instead, remember that sponsorship is optional. If you haven't found a sponsor, simply include a letter stating that you have not found a suitable sponsorship opportunity.
  • ReferencesAvoid submitting referee reports late. Instead, remind your referees that while your deadline is November 12, they have until November 18 at 1 p.m. to upload their assessments to the portal.
  • StrategyAvoid focusing only on your current grades. Instead, highlight your research potential within the specific science and technology discipline you've chosen. Ensure your transcripts clearly show your A- (8.0/10) average to make verification easy for the committee.
  • RealismAvoid counting on this for more than one year. Instead, plan your budget knowing these awards are non-renewable and capped at two years for master's or four years for PhDs.
