About this award

You can receive a $2,500 bursary. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. There are 3 of these awards available for Indigenous students. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student pursuing an engineering degree and are involved in your home community. You must apply between September 1 and October 15. When you apply, ask Manitoba Hydro how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, phone, or a student portal. Winners are chosen based on your academic performance, your home community, your financial need, and your community involvement. Selection criteria aren't published in detail, so ask Manitoba Hydro how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Manitoba Hydro during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you are counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Manitoba Hydro whether it is a one-time award or if you can apply again.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be an Indigenous student enrolled in your second year to final year of studies at the University of Manitoba in one of these engineering fields: biosystems, computer, civil, electrical, or mechanical. You can also qualify if you are a member of the ENGAP (Engineering Access Program — a support system to help students succeed in engineering).

Tips for applying

  • Community InvolvementAvoid just listing the organizations where you volunteered. Instead, describe one specific way your work helped your home community. Write about a project where you saw a real result.
  • StrategyAvoid focusing only on your grades. Instead, balance your application by detailing your financial need and your ties to your community. Show Manitoba Hydro that you are committed to using your degree to help others.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed award since only 3 students are selected. Instead, apply for several other bursaries at the University of Manitoba. Diversify your applications to increase your chances of funding.
