About this award

You can receive a $1,000 CAD scholarship to help pay for your tuition and training costs in trades programs after you finish high school. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are a B.C. resident and a youth apprentice who has successfully balanced school and hands-on work training through the Youth Work in Trades program. No deadline is posted publicly for the upcoming cycle. The 2025 application round is closed and applications reopen in September 2026. Results for the 2025 round went out by email at the end of February 2026, so anyone who applied in that round should already have heard. Ministry staff review applications and choose winners based on financial need if more than 600 people apply each year. Selection criteria aren't published in detail, so ask the Ministry of Education and Child Care how they weigh training costs beside other financial details to select recipients. Once you redeem your scholarship, the money is sent to you as a cheque in the mail, which typically takes 6 to 8 weeks to arrive. Confirm with the provider if there are any other payment options available. You have 3 years to redeem your scholarship after winning. Renewal conditions aren't listed because this appears to be a one-time award, but you should confirm with the Ministry of Education and Child Care if you can apply again for further training.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) and a resident of British Columbia. You must have graduated with a Dogwood Diploma or Adult Dogwood Diploma and achieved a minimum C+ average on your Grade 12-numbered courses. You also need to have completed the Youth Work in Trades program (WRK11A/11B, and WRK12A/12B) while school-aged. This means you were enrolled in a B.C. public school, a Group 1, 2, or 4 independent school, a continuing education centre, or were a registered homeschooler. Additionally, you must have registered as a Youth Apprentice with SkilledTradesBC (the organization that manages trades certification in B.C.) on or after July 1, 2024. Regarding your experience, you generally need at least 900 work-based training hours recorded on the SkilledTradesBC Portal by August 31 immediately following your final school-age year. However, if you do not have 900 hours, you may still apply for the scholarship up to and including the fall immediately following your last school-age year.
