About this award

You will receive a $500 award. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are pursuing a 3- or 4-year undergraduate degree and majoring in Human Rights (HR). You must apply by October 30, 2026. When you apply, ask the University of Winnipeg how and when you'll hear back — whether it is by email, the portal, or phone. You are automatically considered for this award based on your completed General Application. Ask University of Winnipeg how many students usually apply, so you can judge your odds. Ask University of Winnipeg during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with University of Winnipeg whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be majoring in Human Rights (HR) as part of a 3- or 4-year undergraduate degree. To qualify for the second-year scholarship, you must have completed 24-30 credit hours, which must include at least 3 credit hours of Human Rights courses. For the third-year scholarship, you must have completed 54-60 credit hours, and for the fourth-year scholarship, you must have completed 84-90 credit hours; both of these levels require at least 5 credit hours from the Human Rights (HR) core requirements or elective courses. Regardless of your year, you must be registered in the next fall/winter term for at least 6 credit hours from the Human Rights (HR) core requirements and/or elective courses.

Tips for applying

  • Human Rights FocusAvoid mentioning only your general interest in social justice. Instead, highlight the specific Human Rights (HR) core and elective courses you have taken. List the exact credit hours you've earned in these subjects.
  • Portal UsageAvoid waiting until the last minute to log in. Instead, ensure your General Application is fully updated in the University of Winnipeg awards portal well before the deadline. Double-check that your major is correctly listed as Human Rights.
  • StrategyAvoid treating this as a separate application. Instead, focus on the quality of your General Application since that is how you are automatically considered. Ensure all your academic achievements are documented in the system.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this award is guaranteed just because you meet the credit hour thresholds. Instead, remember that you are competing with other Human Rights majors. Check your registration for the upcoming term to ensure you meet the 6-credit hour requirement.
