About this award

You can receive $1,500. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) learner entering a post-secondary program. You must apply by April 15. When you apply, ask the University of Guelph how and when you will hear back — whether by email, phone, or through an application portal. Winners are selected based on who has the highest admission average. Since only one award is available, ask the University of Guelph how many students typically apply so you can judge your odds. Ask the University of Guelph during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, while others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you are counting on this for multiple years, confirm with the University of Guelph whether it is a one-time award or if it is renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be an Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) student entering any program at the University of Guelph. You must also have Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status, or protected-person status. Preference will be given in the following order: 1) entering students who are graduates of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP — a college specializing in Indigenous education), and 2) entering students who are members of Six Nations of the Grand River (SNGR).

This is what the award's official page said when we last checked. Rules change, so confirm on the award's official page before you apply.

  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person
  • Open to high school students
  • Resident of Ontario

Tips for applying

  • RealismAvoid assuming this award is guaranteed because of your background. Instead, remember that only one award of $1,500 is given, and it goes to the student with the highest average among qualified applicants. Continue applying for other bursaries to diversify your funding.
