About this award

You can receive $42,500: $8,250 a year for four years of study, plus one $9,500 stipend for a summer research assistantship. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis), a person with a disability, or a person of colour/racialized person, you have an outstanding academic record, and you have spent your time leading others to bring about improvements in your school or community. You must submit your application by January 22, 2027, at 4:00 p.m. EST (Eastern Standard Time — the local time for Ontario). Your reference letters must arrive by January 29, 2027, at 4:00 p.m. EST. When you apply, ask how and when you'll hear back — email, portal, or phone. Winners are chosen on superior leadership ability and potential, shown through positions held, extracurricular activities, involvement in your high school and community, and your references. There are two Lincoln Alexander Chancellor's Scholarships available. The award is paid in the fall, and you must be registered to receive it. It renews each year if you stay in full-time studies, keep at least an 80.0% average in your previous year of full-time study, and keep showing the leadership it was given for. You must also send a yearly report on your leadership and engagement to the selection committee. Recipients are promised a first-year residence place with their first-choice preference, provided the residence application and deposit are in by the Student Housing Services deadline. You cannot hold it together with the President's Scholarships or the Board of Governors' Scholarships.

Who qualifies

You are eligible if you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada and are entering the first semester of any degree program at the University of Guelph. You must have at least a 90% admission average and have made significant leadership contributions to your school and/or community. You must not have previously attended a post-secondary institution. You must also be Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis), a person with a disability, or a person of colour/racialized person. International students are not eligible.

Tips for applying

• LeadershipAvoid just listing the titles of the clubs you joined. Instead, describe the specific changes you implemented to improve your community. Give a concrete example of a project you led from start to finish.
• ReferencesAvoid choosing referees who only know you as a student in a classroom. Instead, pick people who saw you lead outside of school hours. Ask a community leader or coach to write your letter.
• StrategyAvoid waiting until the last minute to request your letters. Instead, give your referees at least three weeks' notice. Remember that your letters have a separate deadline of January 29, 2027.
• RealismAvoid counting on this award alone. Instead, remember that only two of these scholarships are granted among all domestic applicants. Apply for other bursaries at University of Guelph to diversify your funding.
