About this award

You get $2,000 a year with this award. Because it is awarded annually on a renewable basis, you may be able to receive this funding for multiple years of your studies. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a local leader from the Annapolis Valley who has used your time in high school to improve the lives of others through community service. You must apply by March 1st. When you apply, ask Acadia University how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, a student portal, or a phone call. Winners are chosen on an outstanding high school record and a "Rotary Spirit" of community service or leadership, with preference for students in financial need. Ask Acadia University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Acadia University what GPA or enrollment status you need to maintain to keep the funding.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a graduate from the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board and be entering the first year of a degree or certificate program at Acadia University. You need an outstanding high school academic record and must show a "Rotary Spirit" through evidence of community service and/or leadership initiatives that have positively affected the quality of life of others. A preference will be given to students who exhibit financial need.

Tips for applying

  • Community LeadershipAvoid just listing the names of clubs you joined. Instead, describe the specific ways your leadership initiatives improved the lives of others. Provide a concrete example of a project you led.
  • SupportAvoid vague descriptions of your volunteer work. Instead, answer the form's three questions with specific examples of how your leadership and volunteering helped others.
  • StrategyAvoid treating this as a general entrance scholarship. Instead, focus your application on the "Rotary Spirit" by emphasizing service above self. Tailor your answers to show how you embody this specific value.
  • RealismAvoid counting on grades alone. Instead, remember that the award also looks for community service or leadership. Make your evidence of service as strong as your transcript.
