No fixed amount is posted: the grant is based on your unmet financial need, which U of T works out with a formula that compares your education and living costs with the resources expected from your home province or territory's student aid program. As a grant, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a full-time student at the University of Toronto with remaining unmet financial need after your government or Indigenous sponsorship funding is applied. You apply once per academic year through the Need Navigator. For fall 2026, OSAP students can apply until October 13, 2026 (payment by late October 2026), and students funded by another province or territory or by Indigenous sponsorship until November 3, 2026 (payment by early December 2026). For winter, OSAP students can apply until February 18, 2027 (January 26, 2027 is recommended), and out-of-province and Indigenous-sponsored students until February 8, 2027. If you are eligible, you get an email at your utoronto.ca address within 4 to 5 weeks of the deadline. If your resources are less than your costs, you could qualify for a UTAPS grant; if they are more, you would not. The grant first pays any balance owing on your ACORN account for the year, and any credit left over is deposited into your bank account, so keep your banking details and Canadian mailing address up to date on ACORN. Your government student aid application must be in good standing, not on hold, before your UTAPS assessment can be completed.
You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person (recognized convention refugee). If you are registered under the Indian Act but do not meet those citizenship requirements, you may still be eligible if you provide income and student aid information. You must be registered as a full-time student based on OSAP (the Ontario Student Assistance Program — the provincial office that manages student loans and grants) full-time course load rules for the Fall and/or Winter terms. For summer funding, this is only available to UTSC (University of Toronto Scarborough) students registered full-time from May to August. You must also be enrolled in a UTAPS-approved program (listed on the official page) and have unmet financial need after government aid and/or Indigenous sponsorship funding is counted. You must have applied for and been assessed for student financial assistance from your Canadian home province or territory for the same terms as your application. However, Indigenous students who do not apply for government aid must be receiving Indigenous educational funding, such as PSSSP (the Post-Secondary Student Support Program — a federal funding initiative for First Nations students), Métis, or Inuit post-secondary funding. You are not eligible if you are an international student, a part-time student, or enrolled in a co-op, internship, or PEY (Professional Experience Year — a paid work term) work term. You cannot apply if you are in a professional graduate or second-entry undergraduate program, or if you are a single student less than six years out of high school who chooses not to provide parental information.
