Walter Leatherdale Entrance Scholarship

What you will need

• ✓ Completed General Application via the University of Winnipeg awards portal

About this award

You can receive $12,000 for your first year, which covers a full year’s tuition (30 credit hours) and provides allowances for living expenses and book costs. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. If you meet the renewal rules, you can receive this funding for an additional three years, bringing the anticipated total amount over the full term to $48,000.00. This is for you if you are an outstanding student from rural Manitoba, especially if you come from a farming community. You must apply by March 1, 2027. When you apply, ask University of Winnipeg how and when you'll hear back — whether it is by email, a portal message, or a phone call. You will be automatically considered for this award based on your completed General Application. Ask University of Winnipeg how many students usually apply, so you can judge your odds. Ask University of Winnipeg during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this scholarship for the additional three years, you must enrol in a minimum of 18 credit hours and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA — a number that represents your average grade across all courses) of 3.55. Also, note that you cannot hold this award at the same time as a Special Entrance Scholarship.

Tips for applying

• General ApplicationAvoid leaving sections of your general application blank. Instead, provide detailed information about your achievements in rural Manitoba. Complete every field in the University of Winnipeg portal to ensure you are considered.
• StrategyAvoid ignoring the renewal requirements until your second year. Instead, plan your course load to exceed 18 credit hours and set a study goal to keep your GPA above 3.55. Track your grades early in the term.
• RealismAvoid assuming an automatic application guarantees a win. Instead, remember that this is for "outstanding" students, meaning it is likely competitive. Apply for other bursaries at University of Winnipeg to diversify your funding.
